Life was bleak and people struggled to survive. Children were forced to grow up quickly and adults had to accept their meager livelihoods wrought with misfortune and hardship. As I Lay Dying mirrors, with embellishments and exaggerations, the state of The United States of America and much of the world during the s. The novel is about the poverty-stricken Bundren family who journeys across Mississippi to bury the newly-dead matriarch of their family- Addie Bundren.

The characters must face many trials and tribulations along the way, including a broken leg and a hidden pregnancy. Even so, they are compelled forward to bury their mother.

Each family member of the Bundren family has to face the cold reality of their lives, giving up their dreams or their needs along the way. At the end of the novel, after their loss of innocence, Darl, Vardaman, and Dewey Dell have to wonder if death is a better alternative than the life that they are living. Stone 2 Mortality weighs heavily on the Bundren family, including Darl who must wonder if death is the only relief.

Darl, the second child of the Bundren family, started to lose his innocence before the book even commenced. He resents his younger, half-brother Jewel- who is the illegitimate child of Reverend Whitfield. Darl sees that Addie loves Jewel the most out of all of her children and he is bitter about that fact. Darl lashes out at Jewel, seeming cruel to his younger brother. Even in the first chapter, readers can see that Darl and Jewel are not close. Darl cannot even abide to walk next to his brother.

When Darl describes Jewel, he dehumanizes him and looks as i lay dying essay him with a derogatory view. Before Darl torches the barn, he seems to teach Vardaman something about their mother and what she is doing now. Maybe Darl is trying to reassure his younger brother, or perhaps he has already given into the madness.

Darl says that Addie is speaking to God. It seems that Darl understands why, but Vardaman is still a child- one who is in denial about what is as i lay dying essay on. It seems that Vardaman has greatly aged over the process of the journey and by the end, Vardaman is most likely wondering if the journey was worth it.
